John Chuang's Academic Genealogy

My PhD advisor is Marvin Sirbu, Professor of Engineering and Public Policy, Industrial Administration, and Electrical and Computer Engineering, at Carnegie Mellon University.

His advisor, Michael Godfrey, recently started his fifth career, this time teaching political science.

His advisor, Dwight Baumann, was known as "The Professor", and once drove his diesel-powered Volvo from Pennsylvania to North Dakota solely on sunflower oil.

His advisor, Robert Mann, switched from being a rocket scientist to develop the world's first biomedical prosthetic device, as well as a computer program for translating English text into Braille.

His advisor, John Hrones, was an expert on four-bar linkages and became an assistant professor at MIT one year before he received his doctorate.

His advisor, James Holt, was a specialist in heat engineering who started his teaching career at MIT in 1920, one year after receiving S.B. degrees from Harvard and MIT. He served as Executive Officer of the MIT Mechanical Engineering Department 1946-1962. (Source; thanks to Shannon H. for assistance in tracking down the signature page of Hrones' dissertation.)

Bonus: my undergraduate honors thesis advisor was Elsa Gamire, a pioneer in laser technology whose doctoral advisor was Charles Townes, Nobel Laureate and inventor of the maser.
