Patch for Google Streetview privacy bugs

Filed under: image, locative — ryan @ 10:46 am

I feel better now. Larry Page has issued a patch for the privacy bugs in Google Streetview: simply erect a large gate in front of your property, which will block the Streetview 11-lens panoramic camera from capturing images of your garden parties.

Note: this patch may not work on poorer residences. If you can’t get it to install, earn billions of dollars and try again.

If we would know when the Google truck goes by, it would be relatively easy to disrupt the lenses with a few lasers or a series of timed flashbulbs. With a bit of experimentation, I’m confident it could be cheap.

Actually there was a paper presented at Ubicomp 2005 on just that topic: Preventing Camera Recording by Designing a Capture-Resistant Environment. The solution presented there can detect digital cameras automatically (no need to know when the truck is coming by), though it might not be able to disrupt the Streetview camera, which takes 30 frames per second (they focused on normal cameras).
