Everyone Needs a Butler

Filed under: search, tools — ryan @ 11:16 am

Remember those bright kids I was writing about? One of them just responded to the furor over Google AutoLink by quietly releasing Butler:

Butler enhances Google search results by adding links to competitors. It also removes ads, changes typography, and a few other useful things.

Touché.

A Need for Multimedia Literacy

Filed under: cinema, education — ryan @ 10:06 am

Fascinating article at the NYT today about how film schools are seeing more and more students who are studying film not because they want a future in Hollywood, but because they see media literacy and the ability to communicate through audio and video as critical skills in our media-saturated world:

At a time when street gangs warn informers with DVD productions about the fate of “snitches” and both terrorists and their adversaries routinely communicate in elaborately staged videos, it is not altogether surprising that film school - promoted as a shot at an entertainment industry job - is beginning to attract those who believe that cinema isn’t so much a profession as the professional language of the future.

Strange Yellow Garlic

Filed under: food, image — ryan @ 10:21 pm

Tonight while making dinner Yuki discovered a strange yellow wrinkly garlic clove nestled among the other normal white garlic cloves. I of course turned to the Internet for answers as to the origins of this bizarre mutation, but was surprised when my searches turned up nothing. So I’m posting a photo here in the hope that someday a garlic expert will find this page and enlighten us. This clove smelled far more strongly of garlic than the other normal cloves, so my theory is that it somehow became supersaturated with garlic oil. We didn’t eat it.
