Summary
The aim of this class was to develop the interdisciplinary skills required for successful product management by understanding NPD processes as well as useful tools, techniques and organizational structures that support the NPD practice. We worked with HP Labs in designing a product for their Sustainable IT group.
User Needs
Needs assessment was performed by conducting three rounds of semi-structured interviews with users from the identified market segment: individual consumers in the personal computing space. The interviews were then analysed with the help of affinitity diagrams.
Personas
To frame the insights, three personas were created based on the user interviews and market research.

Ideation and concept selection
- A rapid prototyping session followed whereby each team member individually ideated ~20 concept sketches each for a total of ~80 ideas.
- A concept selection matrix was created to weight the concepts against user needs.
- A brief survey was designed to get user feedback on top three ideas.

Competitive Analysis - verification partners
Based on the survey results, we decided to go forth with a service design for rewarding customers for sustainable purchase decisions after ranking the product line on sustainability factors. Competitive analysis was thus performed for companies that rank sustainability values for consumer and/or computing products.
User Testing
- Conducted behavioral testing
- Gave the final concept paper prototype mock ups to users
- The users role-played a person who wished to buy a new HP laptop
- They were asked to think‐aloud as they interacted with the mock ups
Prototyping
To better communicate the service design concept, the final prototype took the form of a short video skit telling the new story. The backdrop for this skit included the three personas visiting a point of purchase personal computing retail store like BestBuy.
Product Specifications
- Service ecology diagram mapped out the internal/external stakeholders of the service design.
- Functional components of the ecosystem were charted out in a 'How it Works' section.
- Designed two posters – one describing the various stages of the design process and the other for the product specifications.
