E-mail Visualizations

People use their e-mail inbox as a to-do list.

E-mail clients have changed little in the past 30 years.

Existing systems concentrate on numeric attributes of messages.
We want to visualize attributes more important to the user:
threading relationships among messages; social relationships
among participants.

Thread Trees
------------

Threads are small; layout is easy.

Encode sender as colour of nodes.

Timeline
--------

Show trees on a timeline.  Vertical lines represent day boundaries;
days with no mail are shown compressed.

Document Content
----------------

Low-resolution overviews (thumbnails of messages).

After clicking a message, other messages in the thread are highlighted.

Simple parsing to highlight names or dates.

ReMail
------

Client tracks threads, shows nodes on left, provides low-resolution overview
(thumbnail of current message shown in treemap).  Can collapse threads
into a single message item in the inbox.
