Personal

I am a recent graduate from UC Berkeley's School of Information Management and Systems. I have a wide range of interests including database design, usability research, and the social aspects of system design, which have grown out of my diverse experiences in management consulting and social services.

In Progress...

I am a research assistant on 2 web-oriented projects. During the past year, I have worked with Rashmi Sinha to evaluate online recommender systems. We presented our first set of results in Dublin, Ireland at the DELOS conference on Personalization and Recommender Systems. Go to our project page to learn more or view the presentation from the SIMS 213 class on April 11, 2002.

A second study I am supporting is Dr. Marti Hearst's Flamenco project. We are investigating how to effectively incorporate large category hierarchies into information access user interfaces. For more information, see the Flamenco project page. Here's a picture of the project team.

Recently Completed

During the summer of 2000, I supported a project to determine how much information is produced each year, across a range of media, both in the United States and abroad. On this project, I worked with Dean Hal Varian, Professor Peter Lyman, James Dunn, and Aleksey Strygin. Read the press coverage:

For my Final Master's Project, I worked with Amity Zeh to develop a system that recommends books to elementary school children, based on books they have read and enjoyed, as well as their other non-literary interests. Our service, ReadingTree, will be available free of charge through the World Wide Web. Learn more by viewing our presentation.
