Document Engineering is:

Modeling 101 + flexible notion of "document" + XML

A document-centric version of the classical "Analyze-Design-Refine-Implement" Methodology

Key idea is separation of logical model and presentation: applying formatting or style transformations to logical model to create instances with desired properties

When instances implemented in different technologies are generated or re-generated from models, they can more readily interoperate because of their common conceptual components
